Visualize Your Goals.

Be creative and sketch out your ideas and dreams. Even if you’re convinced “this can’t possibly work”, put your desires to paper so we can see if we can work our magic. Don’t think you have to make it look professional – that’s our job! A simple pencil sketch on good ol’ paper will do.

Ask Yourself Lots of Questions.

• How will your old and new space will be used?
• Will it affect traffic patterns?
• Will this project require one or more family members to relocate from their current bedrooms while construction is underway?

Take the Future into Account.

While you don’t have a crystal ball, it pays to think about you, your family members and your future. Is your intention to stay there forever or just a few more years? Instead of eagerly turning your newly college-graduated child’s room into a gym, consider the possibility of your adult child needing a financial break and moving back in for a while. Or aging parents having to move in. Or both…

Agree on Style Preferences.

You and your family will want to be in love with your house for years – so it’s better to discuss up front what styles and materials you prefer – modern and high-tech? Historical and traditional? Metals, stone, wood, even siding colors can be a big decision!

Don’t assume you will all immediately agree to the same design; starting now to come up with extra ideas that will make everyone happy will save you from stress later.

Look Beyond Functionality.

You work hard and you deserve a great place to relax. What’s missing from your home? There are lots of ways the family can come together to enjoy fun and casual family time. Perhaps you would love a bigger deck or a lovely porch? Would your growing family benefit from an extra “play room”? Would the adults appreciate an elegant space for entertaining their friends?
