The Importance of Daylighting
Did you know that the presence of daylight through windows or skylights can affect how you feel? Studies have shown that daylighting can improve your emotional well being on a daily basis. In households which include the elderly, there are less falls in better lit spaces.
We’re willing to bet that someone you know suffers from the “winter blues”. This time of year, with shorter days and longer periods of darkness, many of us can’t wait for Spring, Summer and warmer days. But in reality, we yearn for the longer periods of daylight. When we use better daylighting in our homes (with the correct placement of windows or skylights), we to get to enjoy every minute of natural brightness that the day provides.
Skylights make so much sense in a kitchen where you often don’t have as much room for windows because of the need for cabinetry. After completing a renovation for one family, the mom told us that she walked into her new kitchen on a very gloomy overcast winter day. She was about to yell at the kids for leaving the lights on when she realized that none of the lights were on! All that light was coming from the new skylights… even on an overcast day.
One couple had a kitchen that was so dark they had to turn on the lights even on the brightest, sunny day. After their renovation project, which added a great deal of natural light, they were amazed at how much more they enjoy cooking in a room that makes them feel good. And they love that they can also enjoy their beautiful back yard which was always there, but they couldn’t see from the kitchen.
Many of our clients have told us that they love not having to turn the light on every time they walk into a room. Not to mention the savings in electricity and electric bills when you don’t need to have the lights on all the time!
Another brightening element to your home is the addition of plants. They add beauty and enhance the room with color and living energy. Not just for decoration, they clean the air and actually make the space healthier by absorbing air-borne chemicals and toxins, which purifies the air. Plants are good for us – they soothe our spirit and act as de-stressing agents. The green color of plants relaxes the mind and makes people feel calmer and more optimistic. Adding plants is a great way to “bring the outdoors in.”
